Blondel, Maurice

(1861-1949)
   philosopher
Born in Dijon and educated at the École normale supérieure, Maurice Blondel taught at the universities of Mautaubon, Lille, and Aix-Marseille. Trying to formulate a theory in which no true division would exist between thought and experiential reality, Blondel, in his doctoral thesis, L'Action: essai d'une critique de la vie et d'une science de la pratique (1893), sought to resolve the problem of the relationship between the speculative and the practical. A religious thinker, he wanted to reconcile reason and faith, the immanent and the supernatural. His work holds an important place in the intellectual history of the Catholic Church. At first discussed among philosophers and then theologians, Blondel has strongly influenced the development of Catholic thought (Vers un réalisme intégral, 1898; La Philosophie et l'Esprit chrétien, 1944-47).
